Curriculum

We believe every body is a dancing body and we strive to provide an ideal class for each student. We aim to enrich and develop each individual’s dancer within.

Preschool Curriculum

Fun and creativity abound as teachers  incorporate playful stories and colorful props into weekly class activities. Social skills develop as dancers learn how to take class with one another, moving to music and following a rich curriculum designed to enhance age-appropriate brain development.

Kid & Teen Curriculum

Every type of dancer, from the beginner to the pre-professional or college-bound dance major, will find a class here. Performance, advanced technique, kinesiology, injury prevention, body image, and self-care are just some of the areas included as skilled teachers move dancers through our year-long curriculum.

Brain Compatible Learning for All Ages

ATD curriculum teaches students with the brain in mind. Your dancer will explore movement concepts each week, such as rhythm, size, pathways and more.  Anne Green Gilbert’s BrainDance is also part of our weekly classes and consists of eight developmental movement patterns that humans naturally move through in the first years of life. In addition, students are encouraged to play, create, and reflect in order to build upon skills learned in class.

Placement Philosophy

ATD takes pride in providing individual placements for students – keeping in mind skill level, body awareness, safety, and development of each dancer. At the end of the school year, each dancer receives a personalized placement for the upcoming season. Classes that are Level III and above generally follow a two-year curriculum to allow dancers to expand their knowledge and gain more confidence in material before moving on.

Free Trial/Placement Classes

Exploring dance for the first time? Our studio offers a free trial class to find the right fit for your dancer. Students who come to ATD with previous dance experience are often asked to take a placement class, allowing our staff to determine which level is best suited for your dancer.

Making the Leap to Teen Classes

Our Teen classes are designed for dancers 12+ and are the next step in a challenging course curriculum. Because these classes move at a faster pace and cover more technique, the class levels will vary between the two age sets. For instance, a student in Jazz IV might graduate into a Teen Jazz II class.

Advanced Classes

To ensure that we are training well rounded, multifaceted artists, we require that all dancers enrolled in a Teen level V+ class of any genre, will be required to enroll in at least one class of any other genre.

Building strong foundations for every dancer is our priority, and we believe in building life skills through dance.

Performance Philosophy

Dance is a performing art, and our Spring Performance is all about giving dancers time to shine and share the skills they have developed all year through their hard work and dedication. Performing builds self-esteem and confidence in our students and is a fun event that our community looks forward to year after year.

All of our classes for ages 5 and older (except for Pre-Pointe and Teen Beginning Pointe) build toward a Performance at the end of each year in June. We look forward to our year-end performances every year and hope you’ll join us. We also acknowledge that performance is not for everyone, due to schedules or other commitments—we still welcome non performers in our classes.
